The Asheville Percussion Festival encompasses a whole week of fabulous events for world music aficionados, including immersive workshops in frame drum, doumbek, handpan, djembe, samba, marimba, gamelan, and more, as well as concerts and demos for those who enjoy listening more than playing.
The festival is spread out between several participating locations. It begins Monday, June 24th and runs through Monday, July 1st. Complete schedule, details, and ticket sales can all be found at the Info page of our website: www.ashevillepercussionfestival.com/info
This year's theme, Rhythms of Diversity, brings percussionists from around the globe to Asheville to collaborate with one another and share their musical expertise with enthusiastic workshop attendees. Among the artists coming for this year’s Residency program are four-time Grammy Award winner, Glen Velez; acclaimed rhythm vocalist, Loire Cotler; and a Balinese Gamelan Ensemble from New York, Yowana Sari. We also welcome back Persian daf and tonbak player, Naghmeh Farahmand, and versatile musical prodigy, Adam Maalouf. Local artists who will be participating in the Residency include djembe player, Adama Dembele, from Ivory Coast; members of the Asheville-based Samba group, Zabumba; Director of Village Marimba, Sue Ford; and -of course- River Guerguerian, Artistic Director of the Asheville Percussion Festival.
Check out the Residency Artists page on our website (http://www.ashevillepercussionfestival.com/artists) to learn more about the stellar lineup of talent for the 2019 festival. These inspiring musicians will work together to create original compositions during the week and then perform those pieces in a Masters Concert on Saturday evening, June 29th, at Diana Wortham Theatre.
Among the community offerings this year are a Gamelan Workshop and performance at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and a half day of beginner-friendly FREE workshops, led by several local instructors on Saturday, June 29th, at Odyssey Community School.
On Sunday, June 30th, several of the featured artists will co-facilitate a sound meditation concert, along with River Guerguerian.
This year's Festival events, including the intensive program, are offered à la carte rather than as pre-designed tracks. This flexibility allows you to select the specific festival events you would like to attend, customized to fit your work and travel schedule and create your own experience.
