Slice of Alligator Alley to Return to Wetlands
Thousands of acres of wetlands will be returned to a more natural state through a project spearheaded by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and supported by the South Florida Water Management District. A new water control weir in the L-28 canal near Interstate 75 in Broward County will soon dramatically improve rainfall retention, rehydrating around 8,000 acres of regional wetlands.
About 800 acres of the affected land is within Big Cypress Preserve. The rest of the property is owned by the tribe, which is responsible for final project design, permitting, construction and monitoring. The expected completion date is 2009.
